Benefits of Alternative Therapies

Mental, emotional, and spiritual health are critically important to comprehensive wellbeing. Alternative, holistic therapies can serve as a great complement to other forms of treatment and exercise. Here, we'll discuss a few of these and their benefits.

Please note that these treatments may not be suitable for everyone. Be sure to consult your doctor before pursuing any of these.

Acupuncture

An ancient Chinese practice, acupuncture involves placing solid metal needles into key points of the body to facilitate energy pathways. Studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective for a number of conditions, including nausea, headaches, menstrual cramps, chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. Acupuncture may offer mental health benefits as well, often effective as a treatment for anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Reiki

Stress takes a toll on the mind, body, and spirit. Reiki, a Japanese spiritual healing practice, may help manage it. It's not massage, although it can be an excellent complement to massage therapy practice: rather, Reiki focuses on "life force energy" and the complex, subtle ways the machinations of our bodies interact. Reiki practitioners acknowledge that it's not necessarily a cure for any specific illness or ailment. Rather, it helps facilitate holistic healing all throughout the body and mind.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback therapy allows participants to learn to control seemingly involuntary bodily functions. A therapist connects electrodes to various parts of the body, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, and then guides the participant through a series of relaxation techniques. This guidance allows you to isolate and relax specific tense muscles. Biofeedback therapy can be effective as a treatment for a number of physical problems including migraines, high blood pressure, chronic pain, and incontinence. It may also have mental health benefits, particularly for anxiety and depression.

Qigong

There are numerous varieties of Qigong. Most fundamentally, however, Qigong is about harnessing life force energy; in all its manifestations, it can be considered a form of moving meditation. The goal is to correct energetic imbalances and improve overall health. By activating specific acupuncture points, Qigong can help boost the immune system and alleviate chronic pain. Depending on your goals, Qigong can also be utilized simply as a form of gentle, effective exercise.

Massage therapy

The benefits of massage therapy are innumerable; research on specific uses of massage therapy is constantly developing. Of course, it helps with stress management. In addition, though, it's been shown to support a healthy immune system, ease chronic pain, and boost athletic performance by preventing injuries and reducing tension.
